first_imgFighting for freedom, fame and fortune,  Republican boxers set to make impressionOVER the years, the government of Guyana has given amnesty to Boxers of the Republican boxing Gym (Guyana Prison Service) who have represented Guyana with distinction at Regional and international levels and this year is no different as inmates of the Guyana Prison system showcased their talent on the opening night of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA)/Terrence Alli National Open Championships which got underway at the National Gymnasium on Friday evening.GDF’s Floyd Cato brushes the head of Republican’s Oswald Yaw in their super heavyweight fight on Friday night (Cullen Best-Nelson photos).GDF’s Floyd Cato brushes the head of Republican’s Oswald Yaw in their super heavyweight fight on Friday night (Cullen Best-Nelson photos).Fielding 10 boxers in six of the weight divisions, the prison inmates won six of their bouts and was expected to increase that number last evening and eventually wrest the championship title from the hands of long time repeat champions, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who has had a stranglehold on the title for a number of years.The Republicans got off to a flying start in their quest to take control of the championship when Kevin Allicock recorded a unanimous points decision win over GDF’s Teusimar Peters in their flyweight quarter final contest.Anandfan Dharamraj then made it two wins for the Republicans as he also pounded out a unanimous points decision win over Jemal Brisport (GDF) in their lightweight quarter final clash.Clifton Graham then scored a Technical Knock Out win at two minutes 52 seconds of the first round in his welterweight fight against GDF’s Linden Daniels.Fighting in the same weight division, Republican’s Joshua Joseph scored a unanimous points decision win against Lorex Cummings (GDF).Republican’s final victory for the evening saw Jason Backer securing a walk over victory over GDF’s Rewnaldo Niles.The soldiers for their part registered a TKO win when Aquancy Harvey caused the referee to stop his junior welterweight contest against Quami Cumberbatch (Rep.) in the second round.Desmond Amsterdam (GDF) then recorded a unanimous points decision win against Kevin Rodney (Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym) in their middleweight contest.The soldiers then recorded two victories in the super heavyweight division as Floyd Cato scored a unanimous points decision win against Oswald Yaw (Rep) and Renee Lewis secured a split decision win against Derlon Gordon (Rep).The action was slated to continue last evening at the same venue and will conclude tonight.last_img read more
