first_imgHOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Baptist athletic department concluded two successful campaigns as part of the annual Southland Gives Back event. Representatives from the HBU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the DKMS Delete Blood Cancer drive as well as partnering with the Star of Hope, leading up to their Conference Week of Service Feb. 10-16.HBU athletics completed the DKMS Delete Blood Cancer drive Wednesday, Dec. 4, after registering an astounding 50 new donors into the DKMS system. These new donors will have the opportunity to donate blood or bone marrow in order to help save the lives of people in need throughout the world. In addition to the blood drive, SAAC representatives have worked with their respective teams to sell baked goods to the Houston Baptist student body, while asking for donations throughout the fall semester to raise money for the local Star of Hope homeless shelter. Funds will be collected during the Huskies’ “Week of Service” in February and the SAAC will create care packages to donate to the shelter. To date, the group has raised $800 with two months remaining.“I am really proud of the efforts that our SAAC representatives have shown this semester,” said Assistant Direct of Compliance/SAAC Advisor Charlotte Hartshorn. “From setting up and running team fundraisers, to assisting with the registration of donors at the DKMS drive, each individual has worked hard to really promote the projects chosen this semester. Many of our athletes are starting to become leaders both for their teams and in their personal lives, which is very inspiring and a wonderful achievement for them all. I am excited to continue working with our athletes as we draw closer to the Conference Week of Service project in February.”DKMS is an international nonprofit organization with a mission to fight against blood cancer and blood disorders by: creating awareness, recruiting bone marrow donors to provide a second chance at life, raising funds to match donor registration costs, supporting the improvement of therapies through research and supporting patients from day one of their diagnoses. The Star of Hope is a Houston-based Christian community that is dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and children.
